Music at The Salvation Army
Since its foundation music has been an integral part of Salvation Army meetings.
Band (Bandmaster Phil Ward)
Salvation Army bands originated as a way of attracting people to the gospel - drawing a crowd back from an open air service into the hall to hear the message. Whilst this is still a role, SA bands also play as part of our meetings. Both to accompany congregational singing and to add to the worship experience with message based music as part of our offering of our talents back to the Lord for His use.
Bradford Citadel Band is made up of a variety of professions including a joiner, a bus driver, a nurse, an asset manager for a public utility, a homemaker, some students and retired gentlemen. Our banding is part of our Christian experience, worship and witness.

Songsters (Songster Leader Michael Spargo)
Songster Brigades (or choir) have a similar history within the Salvation Army as bands. Their original purpose was to lead the singing in public meetings and to teach the congregation (many of whom could not read) new songs. The songsters participate in our meetings bringing songs of praise and contemplation to the congregation to enhance the worship and to share, in a corporate way, a personal experience of a loving Saviour.
Similar to the Band, the Songsters' membership comes from a variety of professions.
